Louis Daniel Smith, known to his friends and family as Lou, passed away peacefully on March 30, 2025, at the age of 82 in West Liberty, Ohio. Lou was born on August 25, 1942 in Laurens, South Carolina, to Josephine (Moore) and Homer Smith. From an early age, Lou exhibited a vibrant personality, characterized by his outgoing nature and a keen sense of humor that endeared him to many.
Lou graduated high school from Cocoa, Florida, and pursued higher education at the University of Florida, where he earned an Associate’s Degree in Accounting. His academic achievements paved the way for a fruitful career in the business industry. Throughout his professional journey, Lou made significant contributions while working in various states including, Missouri, Kansas, Ohio, and North Carolina. It was during his time in St. Louis, Missouri, that he met his wife Sonja, with whom he shared many cherished years until her passing in 2019.
After retiring early, Lou embraced his passions for consulting, woodworking and traveling, often accompanied by his siblings and their spouses. His family was the cornerstone of his life, and he took immense pride in his son, Marc, and found great joy in being a grandfather to his two granddaughters, Makenna and Marisa.
Lou was known for his outgoing nature and infectious sense of humor. In his last five years at Green Hills, he enjoyed making friends at the dining hall and teasing the staff that cared for him. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Lou is preceded in death by both his parents, brothers Cody (Patricia) Smith and Jerome (Jeanne) Smith. Lou is survived by his only son, Marc, and his wife Molly, and their daughters Makenna and Marisa, siblings Homer (Ingrid) Smith, Helen (Bob) King, and John (Ginger) Smith and many nieces and nephews.
