John Moore West

December 7, 1928 — April 7, 2020

John M. West, 91, died April 7, 2020 @ 12:39 p.m. at Mount Carmel St. Ann’s Hospital in Westerville, Ohio following a brief illness. John leaves his wife of 69 years, Marilyn J. (Horning) West, sister Ann, brother William, daughter Deborah, sons John, Terry and Norman; 8 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; and many close friends. Born and raised in Shelby, Ohio, the son of Rosemary and William West, John met his wife, Marilyn J. Horning in Mansfield, Ohio and they were married in 1951. In his early years, John helped in the family dry cleaning business, West Dry Cleaners. John was a mechanical engineer for the Charles Hoffman Co. for decades and later taught classes at OSU in HVAC design. John was well known in the Mansfield, Ohio community serving as a Boy Scout troop leader and Scoutmaster. John was also a volunteer basketball coach at St. Peter’s School. John was an active member of many fraternal organizations and an officer in the Elks and Knights of Columbus and was a board member of several professional organizations. Upon graduating high school from Saint Joseph’s Academy in Rennselaer, Indiana, where he played football, John briefly played semi-pro football with the Galion Bulldogs in Galion, Ohio. He was an avid runner with the Mid-Ohio Striders and the U.S. Masters, participating in 5K’s, 10K’s and marathons. Private services will be held at a later date. Please, in lieu of flowers, the family would be thankful if you chose to make a donation to your local hospital. They are all heroes during these dangerous and difficult times.
