Hershel Eugene “Gene” Stickler, 80 passed away on August 12, 2024 in Lancaster, Ohio. He was born on March 11, 1944 in Mason County, West Virginia.
Gene proudly served in the United States Navy, enlisting at the age of 17 on July 6, 1961. He served with distinction during the Vietnam War retiring after 25 years of service as a Petty Officer 1st Class on January 31, 1986. His commitment to his military duties was revered by peers and family alike. After retirement he moved back home to Ohio and worked for the Columbus City Schools until he retired for good in 2005.
Gene was a man who thrived in the great outdoors, finding solace and joy in hunting and fishing. He was also known for his love of playing the lottery, always hopeful for that next big win. His enthusiasm for life and nature was infectious, bringing laughter and happiness to EVERYONE he had ever met. Gene had truly never met a stranger.
Gene was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Janet; his father Clyde “Stick”; his mother Katherine “Kat”; and his brother John and David.
He is survived by his son Dave and daughter-in-law Betty, his legacy continues through his grandsons David (Autumn) and Anthony, and he was joyously anticipating the arrival of his first grand child David Arbie Jr.
Leaf Cremation of Columbus, Ohio is assisting the family during this time. A military graveside service will be held at a later date to honor Gene’s dedication and service.
Gene’s life and service will be remembered and cherished by all who knew him.
