Elvera Louise Winston

April 8, 1946 — November 12, 2020

Elvera Louise (Green) Winston, age 74, of Lithonia, GA formerly of Hammond, IN, passed away peacefully on November 12, 2020 at the Villages of Westerville in Ohio. She was preceded in death by her parents – Harold Green, Sr & Clara (Taylor) Green Cleveland, two brothers - Raymond Green & Harold Green, Jr.; former husband, Lawrence C. Winston, Sr.; stepfather BC Cleveland; and a sister in law, Lucille Winston. Elvera leaves to cherish her memory, a son, Kevin (Amy) Winston of Westerville, OH; a daughter, Susan Michelle Winston of Chicago, IL; two grandchildren – Kourtney (Cameron) Cofield of Westerville, OH and Kyle Winston of Fayetteville, NC; a great-grandchild - Kai Lena Cofield; three sisters – Donna Green of Berkeley, CA, Mary (James) Liddell of Missouri City, TX; Julia Hanley of Atlanta, GA; a brother Robert Green of Oakland, CA; a special brother Ronald Williams of Houston, TX; a sister-in-law Dorothy (Curtis) Dodds of Gary, IN; several nieces and nephews, cousins, and many friends she considered family. Elvera was born on April 8, 1946 in Gary, IN, and was the daughter of the late Harold Green, Sr. and Clara (Taylor) Green. A graduate of Edison High School (Gary, IN) and Purdue University, she was a dedicated healthcare worker and dialysis technician with St. Margaret’s Hospital, and later with Davita Dialysis before retiring in 2006. She was an active member of Ray of Hope Church in Lithonia, GA and loved serving in the Media Ministry and Food Pantry. She was also a member of the Red Hatter’s Society and the Lithonia Senior Center. She loved sports and was an avid sports fan. She loved being with family and friends while enjoying good food and good company, which many times led to a very competitive game of spades. Elvera spent her life serving and helping others. She was an extrovert and loved people, and never knew a stranger. She was always the bright spot in the crowd, with her friendly demeanor and infectious personality, and to know her was to love her. Elvera was a loving mother, grandmother, a newly great-grandmother, a sister, aunt, and friend. She lived her life with optimism, positivity, and gratitude. She was loving and giving to all that knew her, and the world is a little darker without her. Elvera’s 2-1/2-year battle with cancer was fought with courage and grace. She never complained and was determined to live to see her first great-grandchild born (with God’s grace and pure grit and fortitude she was successfully able to meet Kai Lena Cofield born on November 2, 2020). She will be greatly missed by many, and lovingly remembered by her family. The family wishes to thank the caregivers of the Village of Westerville Nursing home, Heartland Hospice Care (OH) and the Long Leaf Hospice Care team (GA) for the excellent treatment and care. The family would also like to express our appreciation for all those that were able to visit and call Elvera, showed her love and kept her encouraged. A memorial service will be held and announced at a later date (TBD - due to current COVID 19 conditions). Arrangements are with Leaf Cremations of Ohio. If you would like to share a memory of Elvera or offer a message of condolence for her family, please visit her Tribute Wall.
