Edward Clifford Stewart

Retired Chief Edward Clifford Stewart passed peacefully at Genesis Hospital on August 11, 2020 in Zanesville, Ohio at the age of 68. Born on January 7th, 1952 in Zanesville, Ohio to Clifford and Sarah (Weigand) Stewart, he graduated from John Glenn High School in 1970 and continued his education at Muskingum Area Technical College in 1973 with an associate degree in Criminal Justice. He married Jill Kathy Stinson in 1973 at The Community Camp in New Plymouth, Ohio, where they met as camp counselors. In Athens, Ohio he started his career as a policeman. After moving to New Concord, he soon took the position of Chief of Police. Ed Served the Village of New Concord for over 27 Years. After retirement, he pursued his dream job as a Park Ranger for the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District. He is remembered as a loving husband/father/grandfather who encouraged them to pursue their goals. He was a strong leader in the New Concord community where his legacy of ‘community policing’ will continue. He was a great friend, mentor, and hero to many. Ed Served as an Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 510 and was honored with the coveted Silver Beaver Award. Passionate about the Village of New Concord, he received the Dedicated Public Servant award, the NC Board of Trade’s Community Service Award, and inducted in the New Concord Fireman’s Association’s Hall of Flame. He enjoyed camping, fishing, trips to the beach, Ham Radio (N8HFD), and spending time with his family. Edward is survived by his mother Sarah A. Smith of New Concord; wife Jill Stewart of New Concord; Sons Benjamin R. (Heidi) Stewart of Manheim, PA and Jordan E. Stewart of New Concord. Siblings Mary Ann (Lawrence) Tann of Columbus, OH and John (Michelle) Stewart of Boerne, TX. He is also survived by his grandchildren Gunnar, Colton, Josie, Rocky, and Alianna. He is preceded in death by His Father Clifford H. Stewart and Brother Robert Stewart. A Celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date when large groups are permitted. Arrangements are being handled by the family and Leaf Cremation Services.
