Dezso "David" Apathy Jr.

October 27, 1951 — September 23, 2023

Dezso Apathy Jr., “David”, born October 27, 1951 in Szeged, Hungary, died September 23, 2023 peacefully, at home in Grandview Heights, Ohio, just a few weeks prior to his 72nd birthday. Came to America as a child with his parents Dezso and Janka, and younger brother Jenci, escaping after the Hungarian Revolution to a refugee camp in Yugoslavia and a two-year delay in Switzerland, finally settling in Columbus with the help of Boulevard Presbyterian Church. Graduated from Grandview Heights H.S. in Columbus, Ohio.


Dezso earned his master’s degree from The Ohio State University and continued his studies at Harvard University. He was a CPA, MBA and had a fascinating career, including working as the Financial Manager for the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics, which was the first Olympics to ever make a profit.


Dezso became fascinated with the Olympics during high school while watching the 1968 summer games in Mexico City. He traveled around the World and was fortunate to attend 16 Olympic games in total: 10 summer Olympics and 6 winter Olympics as a spectator and met with several athletes in person.


He found a passion for Olympic pin-collecting while attending his first summer games in Montreal in 1976. Read this article about his hobby. He also helped organize multiple Fluoride Conferences and Amyloid Symposiums in Budapest. He also was working with Jimmy Carter on Habitat for Humanity, and was in the circle of Arpad Goncz, Former President of Hungary.
