Alan G. Johnston

Alan Geoffrey Johnston, age 79, passed away peacefully at his home in Westerville, Ohio, on December 30, 2023, after an extended illness. Alan was preceded in death by his son, Geoffrey Alan, and his parents, Archie M. and Marie Kresser Johnston of Robinson, IL., formerly of Findlay,OH. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Rebecca Schutte Johnston.


Five siblings also survive him: Roger Johnston (Royce) of Bratenahl, OH, Jamie Blakely of Fishers, IN, Dr. Sarah Johnston-Rodriguez (Ben) of Madison, WI, David Johnston of Palatine, IL, and John Johnston (Dena) of Venetia, PA. He is also survived by 9 nieces and nephews, 10 great-nieces and nephews, and 2 great-great-nephews.


Born and raised in Robinson, Illinois, Alan was a 1962 graduate of Robinson High School. After exploring various academic and career paths, he enlisted in the US Navy in 1967 during the height of the Vietnam War. He served on the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise as a radarman stationed off the coast of Vietnam during the war, and on the USS Saratoga in the Mediterranean.


Following his honorable discharge from the Navy, Alan assisted his parents, managing their restaurant in Robinson, before again pursuing higher education. He graduated from Ohio State University in 1977 with a bachelor’s degree in education. Alan dedicated 30 years of service to OSU, working in Medical Lab Plant Operations until his retirement.


Alan was known for his infectious laughter, deep love for his family, passion for the Buckeyes, and his fondness for sharing time with his siblings. His absence is deeply felt, but his warm smile and joyful spirit live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.


A Celebration of Life honoring Alan's memory will be held later in the Spring in Columbus. Memoriams can be directed to the Westerville Community United Church of Christ, 770 County Line Rd, Westerville, OH 43081
