Kimberly Jo Metzger

November 11, 1961 — May 7, 2023

Kimberly “Kim” Jo Metzger, passed away suddenly on May 7, 2023, in her hometown of Urbana, Ohio. Born to Wayne and Loretta Metzger on November 11, 1961, Kim was a miracle baby born 3 months prematurely and weighing just one pound and twelve ounces. She was best known for her caretaking of others and love of dogs.

Kim graduated from Urbana High School in 1981. She worked for many years in housekeeping and in most recent years as a kennel attendant and personal caregiver. Kim spent most of her life in the service of others and she will be remembered for her friendliness and generosity.

Kim had a love for animals beginning at a young age; but it was her unwavering compassion and love for dogs that was a defining trait of her personality. Kim also took great enjoyment with children, spending many years babysitting friends and family’s little ones. She was enamored by and extremely proud of her nieces/nephews and great nieces/nephews. Kim enjoyed doting on all the children she loved. Kim also delighted in crocheting, a hobby that she shared with friends and family with heartfelt keepsakes. Whether taking care of animals or children, or giving away handmade blankets, Kim’s selflessness for others was exceptional.

Kim is survived by her son, Joshua Dovell of Hillsboro, OR; sister, Kristie (Michael) Flamm of Tucson, AZ; brother, Steve (Melissa) Metzger; nieces, Tawnie (Alex) Baranick of Los Angeles, CA, and Amanda Metzger of Springfield; step-nieces and nephews, Matt (Mara Vulgamore) Flamm of Columbus, OH, Laura (Brian Murphy) of Baltimore, MD, and Brad Flamm of San Diego, CA; and multiple great-nieces and nephews. Kim was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Don Joseph “Joe” Dovell, and her parents, Wayne and Loretta Metzger.

As we mourn the loss of Kim, we also celebrate her life and the impact she had on others. She will be deeply missed.

To honor Kim’s legacy and her love for animals, the family asks that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Paws Animal Shelter, Champaign County Humane Association 1535 W. US Highway 36, Urbana.
